Costa Rica has long been on my travel bucket list. Its lush landscapes, welcoming culture, and promise of a simpler, more connected way of life have called to me for years. So when the opportunity arose to visit the Pure Vida Resort & Spa in Alajuela, I didn’t hesitate—I packed a bag, booked a flight, and embraced the adventure.
What I found during my stay was far more than a relaxing getaway. I discovered a rich, layered reality behind the postcard-perfect scenery. From sustainable living and yoga retreats to navigating real estate and residency, this trip revealed what it really takes to live in Costa Rica—and it’s not always as simple as it seems.
🌿 A Hidden Gem in the Mountains of Alajuela
Pure Vida Resort & Spa is nestled in the verdant hills outside of Alajuela. With panoramic views of San José, lush gardens, and a peaceful energy throughout, it’s the kind of place where time slows down.
We were visiting as part of a wellness retreat for licensed massage therapists, though I came along as a “tagalong spouse.” From tentalos (glamping-style accommodations) to A-frame suites, the property was designed to be both immersive and deeply relaxing. My husband and I lucked out—snagging the Leela Suite at the last minute, which had arguably the best view in the entire resort.
The resort is also eco-conscious, featuring filtered on-site water (yes, we drank it safely!), local cuisine, and architecture that respects the natural surroundings. And of course, there was yoga—held in the tranquil Leila Hall just steps away from our suite.
🗣️ Meet Eduardo: The Man Behind the Scenes
One of the most enlightening parts of our trip came through a spontaneous conversation with Eduardo, the caretaker of Pure Vida since 2008. Friendly, knowledgeable, and honest, Eduardo has seen it all—and he had a lot to say about living and investing in Costa Rica.
He explained how the property evolved from a single-family home to a full-fledged wellness resort. As the owners began inviting friends and family, the vision for a community-style retreat took shape, eventually modeled after a similar spa in Mexico. Today, the resort remains family-owned, focused on sustainability, healing, and intentional living.

Curious about real estate, I asked Eduardo what it takes to move to Costa Rica or buy property. Here’s what I learned:
- Property costs vary dramatically depending on location. Coastal properties, especially modern condos, are in high demand and priced accordingly. In contrast, the mountain regions offer more land at a lower price—but fewer amenities.
- Most foreign buyers want to live closer to the ocean and nature, away from the hustle of city life. That serenity comes at a price—not just in real estate, but in daily convenience.
- Setting up a business in Costa Rica is possible but involves paperwork, permits, and patience. According to Eduardo, “You can make any business profitable if you try hard enough,” but you’ll need to be ready for the bureaucratic process.
- Residency isn’t automatic. Many expats live on tourist visas, leaving the country every 90 days to renew their stay. Others pursue legal residency through property investment or showing sufficient funds in a bank account—but that comes with its own set of legal hurdles.
- Most importantly, do your research—especially when choosing an attorney. Eduardo warned of scams where foreigners lost tens of thousands of dollars. Personal referrals and vetting are key.
🥥 Life Lessons in the Tropics
Beyond the technicalities of visas and investments, our week in Alajuela reminded me of something deeper: the value of intentional living. Whether through daily yoga, fresh meals cooked by locals, or quiet mornings with the birds, life here moves differently.
If you’re drawn to Costa Rica—as a traveler, an expat, or a future retiree—take the time to explore beyond the surface. Talk to locals. Understand the laws. Visit multiple areas. And most of all, be open to the learning that comes from slowing down.

Living in Costa Rica is a dream for many—but it’s one that requires planning, patience, and purpose. Whether you’re seeking a simpler lifestyle, an investment opportunity, or a new start, there’s much to admire in this tropical paradise—but also much to understand.
